How is rehabilitation different in the life insurance industry?

Rehabilitation in the life insurance is generally aimed at assisting individuals with incapacitating illnesses and injuries to regain wellness. When effectively implemented, engagement with an external provider can empower individuals to regain their overall sense of wellbeing and return to work.

Life insurance employs a unique approach to rehabilitation. Below are some of the ways the process is different in the life insurance industry:

Involvement with a rehabilitation provider is completely voluntary

In the life insurance industry, members are afforded the freedom to choose whether to engage with a rehabilitation provider. The sector lacks a compliance mandate and the success of the rehabilitation process hinges on the relationship between the policy holder, the rehabilitation provider and the insurer.

The goal isn't always return to work

The rehabilitation process is usually geared towards a return to wellness and to some extent, work readiness.  Although there is no denying the health benefits of work, the goal isn’t always returning employees to work. Unlike most of the other sectors, life insurers do not have a strict obligation to get people back to work.

Long-term strategies are encouraged by insurers

Policies can cover members until they are 65. Insurers use holistic long-term strategies in relation to rehabilitation to help their members retain wellness over the course of their cover.

Having a flexible rehabilitation process can improve claims management right across the industry by reducing the duration of claims, providing greater benefits for members, as well as reducing the cost for life insurers.
